The Street Division is divided into four sub-divisions: Street Maintenance, Street Cleaning, Storm Drainage and Graffiti Abatement. They are responsible for maintenance and repair of the City’s streets, street signs, pavement markings, alleys, storm drainage systems, the annual leaf removal program, maintain a regular street sweeping schedule, graffiti cleanup and perform other related work as well as responding to emergency situations that may arise.
It is their goal to maintain streets in a safe condition and provide preventative maintenance to postpone the need for expensive reconstruction. In addition they remove debris from road surfaces to increase safety, improve the appearance of the roadways, improve drainage and reduce dust and air pollution. They maintain above ground and underground collection and transmission systems designed for the removal of rainwater from street surfaces to protect the public from potential storm water damage to their person and/or property.
During periods of heavy rain, the City of Madera provides sandbags and sand free of charge for city residents. Sandbags are an effective way to deflect water and protect structures during periods of heavy rainfall, and they offer a simple yet effective way to prevent or reduce flood damage. Sandbags are only available when moderate to heavy amounts of rain are forecasted. Residents must bring their own shovels to fill bags.
Sandbags:
Public Works Corporation Yard • 1030 S. Gateway Dr.
Sand:
East side of the lot at E and 14th St.
(across the railroad tracks from the Public Works Corporation Yard)

After the storm sandbags may be kept in a covered area and used for future storm events. When the woven material begins to break down, bags should be discarded. Sand may be used in gardens or other outdoor applications.

Clean Stormwater is Important to All of Us
When stormwater flows through yards, gutters and streets it picks up oil, sediment, litter, garden chemicals and other materials. This storm water runoff flows through the City’s storm drains to ponding basins within the City of Madera and the San Joaquin River. Storm water helps replenish groundwater – our drinking water supply. That’s why CLEAN STORMWATER is important to you!
Pollution Prevention
Our lifestyles can contribute to the pollution of our water resources. Rain and excess water from home use (over watering, car washing, etc.) will flow down gutters, into pipes and to stormwater basins, canals, creeks, and in some areas, to the San Joaquin River.
This water contributes to groundwater recharge and ends up as part of our drinking water supply. That is why it's important to keep storm drains and stormwater clean. Pollution prevention is not just up to businesses, but individuals, too. We all need to do our part to help keep stormwater clean.
